Learn to Prevent Gum Disease on the Web
Format: Web Site
Institute: National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), National Library of Medicine (NLM)
Good oral health is key to quality of life. When your mouth is healthy, you can eat the foods you need for good nutrition and feel better about smiling, talking, and laughing. But gum (periodontal) disease—an infection of the gums and tissues that hold teeth in place—can harm oral health and is a leading cause of tooth loss among older adults. You can learn more about gum disease on the new Gum (Periodontal) Disease Web page on NIHSeniorHealth. The information on the page, contributed by NIDCR, covers risk factors and prevention, symptoms, treatment, and frequently asked questions.
You can learn more about gum disease at www.nihseniorhealth.gov/periodontaldisease/toc.html. NIHSeniorHealth is a senior-friendly Web site from NIA and NLM.
