NIMH Alliance for Research Progress Winter Meeting
When: February 18, 2011
Where: Bethesda, MD
Institute: National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
In February, NIMH convened the 14th meeting of the NIMH Alliance for Research Progress. The Alliance is a group of leaders from patient- and family-related advocacy organizations directly concerned with mental illnesses. NIMH brings this group together twice a year to provide Alliance members with the opportunity to learn about scientific advances in mental health research, to discuss important information related to changes in the field, and to engage in direct dialogue with NIMH leadership.
In addition to hearing a research update from NIMH Director Thomas R. Insel, members heard intriguing presentations on future directions for NIH, new initiatives for the mental health advocacy and neuroscience community, and opportunities and challenges for mental health in the era of health care reform. The meeting also highlighted the National Advisory Mental Health Council (NAMHC) report titled From Discovery to Cure and the new NIMH study Establishing Moderators/Mediators for a Biosignature of Antidepressant Response in Clinical Care. Guest speakers included:
- The Honorable Patrick Kennedy, former U.S. Congressman
- Susan Dentzer, editor-in-chief, Health Affairs
- David A. Lewis., director, Translational Neuroscience Program, University of Pittsburgh, and member of the NAMHC
- Myrna M. Weissman, professor, epidemiology and psychiatry, Columbia University, and chief, Division of Epidemiology, New York State Psychiatric Institute
