Findings Magazine: Sepsis and a Scientific Surprise
Institute: National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)
Kevin Tracey, an immunologist and neurosurgeon at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in New Jersey, studies why our immune systems can make us sick. His work, inspired by the tragic death of a young patient, could lead to new ways to treat septic shock and other diseases.
Estela Arrese, a biochemist at Oklahoma State University, studies fat storage and regulation in insects. Her work could illuminate human diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, and improve pest control.
You can read more about Dr. Tracey and Dr. Arrese in the current issue of Findings magazine. Findings, published twice a year by NIGMS, profiles scientists doing cutting-edge research. It is available free to the public.
