Hispanic Heritage Month—A Great Time to Raise Awareness About Eye Health

When: September 15–October 15, 2011
Where: Nationwide
Institute: National Eye Institute (NEI)

A recent national survey found that Hispanics knew less than other groups about eye health and were the least likely to have their eyes examined. However, Hispanics have some of the highest rates of visual impairment and blindness. Given this disparity in knowledge about eye health and the high prevalence of eye disease among Hispanics, NEI's National Eye Health Education Program will expand its year-round efforts to educate Hispanics about the importance of eye exams. During Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated September 15–October 15, NEI will encourage Hispanics and their loved ones to learn more about eye health and what they can do to protect their vision.
