Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
ARDS is breathing failure that can occur in critically ill persons with
underlying illnesses. It is not a specific disease. Instead, it is a life-threatening
condition that occurs when there is severe fluid buildup in both lungs.
Hantavirus
Hantavirus is a distant cousin of Ebola virus, but is found worldwide.
The virus is spread by human contact with rodent waste. Dangerous respiratory
illness develops.
Gulf War Syndrome
Gulf War Syndrome, or Persian Gulf Syndrome, describes a wide range of
symptoms and illnesses reported by people who served in Operations Desert
Shield and Desert Storm in 1990-91.
Medical experts have concluded that while Gulf War veterans suffer from
real illnesses, there is no single disease or medical condition that affects
Gulf War veterans. However, typical symptoms include fatigue, skin rash,
headache, muscle and joint pain, memory loss and difficulty concentrating,
shortness of breath, sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal problems and
chest pain. Exact causes and long term effects are still being studied.
Neurofibromatosis
Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder of the nervous system. Symptoms
include changes in skin appearance, tumors, or bone abnormalities.

and those at risk for acute
