Julio Frenk to Deliver Barmes Lecture:
"Globalization and Health: The Role of Knowledge in an Interdependent World"

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and the Fogarty
International Center, both part of the National Institutes of Health, jointly
announce Julio Frenk, M.D., Ph.D., as presenter of the 2009 David E. Barmes Global
Health Lecture. Dr. Frenk, dean of the Harvard School of Public Health, will
discuss "Globalization and Health: The Role of Knowledge in an Interdependent
World. "

Dr. Julio Frenk was the Minister of Health of Mexico from 2000-2006 and a senior fellow in the global health program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He is the recipient of the 2008 Clinton Global Citizen Award for changing "the way practitioners and policy makers across the world think about health." |

The annual lecture series honors the late
David E. Barmes, a long-standing World Health Organization
employee, special expert for international health at NIDCR
and ardent spokesman for global health. |
Dr. Frenk is Dean of the Faculty and T & G Angelopoulos Professor of Public Health
and International Development at the Harvard School of Public Health. During
his tenure as the Minister of Health of Mexico, he introduced a program of comprehensive
national health insurance, known as Seguro Popular, which expanded access to
health care for tens of millions of previously uninsured Mexicans. Dr. Frenk
also was founding director-general of the National Institute of Public Health
in Mexico, one of the leading institutions of health education and research in
