Wellcome Trust director to deliver global health lecture at NIH

What

Sir Mark Walport, director of the Wellcome Trust, will deliver the 12th annual David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture at the National Institutes of Health. Walport, recently named the United Kingdom’s next chief science adviser, has titled his talk “Global Health: from John Snow to Genome Science.” He will discuss the power of genetics in understanding infectious diseases and explore how global health can best be supported. British physician John Snow is considered to be one of the fathers of modern epidemiology and is renowned for his work tracing the source of an 1854 cholera outbreak in London to a single water pump.

Who

Sir Mark Walport, FRS, FMedSci, director of the Wellcome Trust, will become the U.K.’s chief science adviser on April 1. The Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation dedicated to improving health, is a partner on NIH’s H3Africa initiative, intended to develop genomics capacity across Africa. Before joining the Trust, Walport was professor of medicine and head of the division of medicine at Imperial College London. He has served on a number of U.K. and international scientific advisory bodies. In 2009, he received a knighthood for services to medical research and in 2011 was elected a fellow of The Royal Society.
