Dr. Gordenin explains how the field known as data science made these research findings possible
Proteins highlighted by our study, APOBECS, are a new kind of carcinogenic mutagen. This mutagen comes not from outside, but from inside of the human body. I would like to stress that we were able to pinpoint widespread APOBEC mutagenesis in cancers so quickly, because of recent exciting development in the field called data science. Data science operates with large data sets accumulated by joint efforts of hundreds and thousands of researchers. Merging data science with traditional molecular biology and genetics allows to shortcut across years and years of bench research and generate new knowledge important for human health.
