Statement from the National Institutes of Health on the WHIMS Study

The Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS) is a sub-study of the Women’s Health Initiative and is funded by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. The part of WHIMS that analyzed data for women on estrogen plus progestin is now completed and it is our understanding that the data are undergoing peer review. Peer review is the process whereby a panel of independent scientists reviews the findings of a research study and assesses the quality and reliability of the conclusions prior to journal publication. This review is a critical step in ensuring that the medical profession and the public receive accurate information. Therefore, the NIH will not comment on the study until a peer-reviewed manuscript is made available.
