Science Education: Bringing Neurobiology and Addiction Research to the Public
What: A NIDA-supported workshop designed to provide science teachers with tools to introduce school-aged children and adults to issues related to drug abuse and addiction. The workshop is comprised of four sessions:

  • Brain Power: Introducing elementary school-age children to topics of scientific inquiry, neurobiology and addiction
  • The Reconstructions: Web-based multimedia for teaching middle school students about the history and science of opioids
  • Bringing pharmacology to high schoolers: A novel curriculum to increase basic knowledge of biology, chemistry and drug abuse
  • Neurobiology of addiction: Educating the adult public
Who: The National Institute on Drug Abuse, a component of the National Institutes of Health, as a part of the College of Problems of Drug Dependence.

Why: Most cigarette, alcohol and drug abuse begins during adolescence, and an early age of onset of drug use is associated with longer and more severe use and more difficulty achieving abstinence. The workshop will provide teachers with science-based tools and information for enhancing education about the health consequences of drug use and addiction.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse is a component of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NIDA supports more than 85 percent of the world's research on the health aspects of drug abuse and addiction. The Institute carries out a large variety of programs to ensure the rapid dissemination of research information and its implementation in policy and practice.
