Subject: Press Briefing -- Announcement of Draft HIV/AIDS Treatment Guidelines

An expert panel, convened by DHHS and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, drafted The DHHS Guidelines for the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in HIV-Infected Adults and Adolescents. The Guidelines, now available for public comment, contain recommendations for health care providers on testing for disease progression and using new combinations of antiretroviral treatments for people with AIDS. A companion draft document, Report of the NIH Panel to Define Principles of Therapy of HIV Infection, is also available for public comment. Together, the documents provide the scientific rationale for therapeutic strategies as well as practical guidelines for implementing the strategies.
