Transcript:

Akinso: It's well-known that drug abuse can lead to increased risk of contracting HIV. It's also common knowledge that many teenagers go through life thinking "nothing bad can happen to me." That's why the National Institute on Drug Abuse has unveiled a new public awareness campaign that targets teens. They call it "Drug Abuse and HIV: Learn the Link", because research shows that a significant portion of young people aren't concerned about becoming infected with HIV. Dr. Cindy Miner is the Deputy Director for the Office of Science Policy and Communications at NIDA. She highlights the different components of the campaign.

Miner: We are releasing a new public service announcement called text message, that's targeting teenagers to talk about the link between drug use and HIV risk. We're also releasing a new research report on HIV AIDS; that discusses the pivotal role that drug use can play and the spread of HIV AIDS. We're launching a new website as well www.hiv.drugabuse.gov that will have links to a lot of pertinent information. It'll also have our PSAs on that website. And you can order the research report and other information that NIDA has on drug use and AIDS.

Akinso: In addition to being available on the website, the announcements will be distributed to television stations across the country. This is Wally Akinso at the National Institutes of Health Bethesda, Maryland.
