Transcript:

Akinso: It's estimated that anxiety disorders affect between 3 and 14 percent of older adults in a given year.

Evans: The NIHSeniorHealth website has a topic on anxiety disorders in older adults.

Akinso: Dr. Jovier Evans is a Program Officer at the National Institute of Mental Health.

Evans: This website will offer valuable information regarding risk and protected factors around anxiety disorders as well as basic information about signs, symptoms, and treatment.

Akinso: According to Dr. Evans, although anxiety disorders can severely affect a person's life, they are often overlooked in older adults.

Evans: Anxiety disorders frequently occur at the same time as lots of other illnesses such as depression, diabetes, heart disease, or other medical illnesses. They may be misdiagnosed or not even seen. In addition, problems with changes in life circumstances that can happen to older adults may also complicate diagnosis.

Akinso: The NIH Senior Health website was jointly developed by the National Institute on Aging and the National Library of Medicine for older adults and their families. If you would like to read up on this topic, visit www.NIHSeniorHealth.gov. This is Wally Akinso at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland.
