NIH-supported study finds strategies to reduce college drinking (MP3 - 02:33, 2.3 MB)

NIAAA-supported researchers undertook the present study, the Safer California Universities study, to address that need. Researchers conducted a trial of college and community alcohol prevention strategies at 14 large public universities in California. They found that heavy drinking at off-campus parties was reduced at universities that implemented highly visible prevention projects in cooperation with their surrounding communities. The greatest reductions were found at universities with the highest intensity of intervention implementation, achieved through heavy publicity and highly visible enforcement activities.

New NIH data show gains in COPD awareness (MP3 - 02:37, 2.4 MB)

Awareness of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) continues to grow steadily in the United States, according to survey results released today by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health. According to the survey, 69 percent of adults say they are aware of COPD, up five points from 64 percent in 2008. However, up to 30 percent of Americans still report being unaware of the condition - even those most at risk – current and former smokers.

NIH-Supported Mouse Studies Suggest Treatment Target for Alcohol Problems (MP3 - 02:48, 2.4 MB)

In the central nervous system, the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling pathway has been linked to processes related to learning and memory. Since alcohol abuse disorders stem in part from a maladaptive form of learning and memory, NIAAA researchers hypothesized that mTORC1 might be involved in alcohol problems.

NIH Study Identifies Ideal Body Mass Index (MP3 - 02:17, 2.1 MB)

A study of nearly 1.5 million adults looking at deaths from any cause, found that a body mass index (BMI) between 20.0 and 24.9 is associated with lowest risk of death compared to other BMI levels. In addition, individuals who were overweight were 13 percent more likely to die during the study follow-up period (a median of 10 years) than those with a normal BMI.
