Rare gene glitch may hold clues for schizophrenia – 1
Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. A new study has linked a rare genetic mutation to the mental illness schizophrenia. The mutation has been found in a very small percentage of people, but the finding could help improve treatment for many with the disorder.
Sebat: This has immediate implications for diagnosis and treatment.
Narrator: Dr. Jonathan Sebat at the University of California San Diego led the study team.
Sebat: Schizophrenia is a genetic disorder. We can find these genes, and these genes identify new pathways that are potential avenues for drug development.
Narrator: He explains that schizophrenia is known to have a strong genetic component. For more on schizophrenia and this study, visit www.nimh.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
