Long life in the 21st Century – 1

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. A new study estimates that 2.5 percent of the United States population, or about 7.6 million Americans, have food allergies. Dr. Darryl Zeldin at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences says some groups are more likely to have food allergies.

Zeldin: If you were black you were about threefold more likely to have food allergy than if you’re not black. If you were a male your about twofolds more likely to have food allergy than if you’re female. And if you’re a child you’re about twofolds more likely to have food allergy than if you’re an adult.

Narrator: For more on the study, visit www.niehs.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
