Tai Chi May Benefit Patients with Fibromyalgia – 3
Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. In a recent study, investigators took 66 patients with fibromyalgia, a disorder characterized by muscle pain, fatigue, and other symptoms, and taught half of them to practice tai chi, an ancient meditative form of exercise. Dr. Josephine Briggs at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says the other half was given stretching exercises.
Briggs: The people who did tai chi had a significantly greater improvement in their symptoms. They also reported better sleep quality, better mood, and better quality of life.
Narrator: Dr. Briggs adds, the investigators are quite enthusiastic about the potential of this study. For more information, visit www.nccam.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
