World population aging – 1

Narrator:  This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy.  Aging is changing the world’s population.

Suzman:  Within about five or ten years, for the first time in human history, there will be more people over age 65 in the world than children under age 5.

Narrator:  Dr. Richard Suzman is a population expert at the NIH. He says the aging of the world’s population is likely to continue; in fact it is happening faster and faster.  And old age brings risks for disability.  But…

Suzman:  Old age disability is not inevitable.

Narrator:  Medical, lifestyle and education factors can make a difference in disability. For more information on aging, visit www.nia.nih.gov.  Health Matters is produced by the NIH, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
