NIH-led study identifies genetic variant that can lead to severe impulsivity – 3

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. Researchers studying violent criminal offenders in Finland have identified a genetic variant that can lead to severe impulsivity. Dr. David Goldman at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism explains.

Goldman: Everybody has this gene, and also everybody has severe genetic variants of this nature. But everybody doesn’t have this particular severe genetic variant. In fact, we haven’t seen it in any other population world wide.

Narrator: Researchers add, the discovery of a genetic variant which predicts impulsivity, even under specific conditions in one human population, may have wider implications.
