Narrator:  This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. The use of data from the Women’s Health Initiative, a large NIH-funded study, underscores the importance of volunteers.

Nickens: It’s very important for people and certainly women to participate in clinical research and clinical studies.

Narrator: Dr. Patrice Nickens at the NIH says researchers have recently gained insights on sudden cardiac death.

Nickens: We have very important information on the incidence and prevalence of this disease, which results in premature death

Narrator: She adds there is now a better understanding of who is at risk, namely women who are African-American, older, have elevated hip-waist ratio or higher pulse.
