NIH study identifies ideal body mass index – 2

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. Investigators have provided precise estimates of the increased risk of death among people who are overweight and obese. Dr. Amy Berrington at the National Cancer Institute explains, for a research study, her team wanted to answer two questions:

Berrington: What is the optimal body mass index range and also what's the risk associated with being in the overweight category. That’s having a body mass index in the range of 25 to 30.

Narrator: Overall for men and women combined, for every five unit increase in body mass index, the researchers observed a 31 percent increase in risk of death.
