January is Glaucoma Awareness Month – 2
Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. During January, experts are stressing the importance of dilated eye exams to protect against glaucoma. Dr. James Tsai at the Yale School of Medicine says glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve.
Tsai: Damage to the optic nerve can initially cause blind spots at the outer edges of the field of vision.
Narrator: If not caught early enough, glaucoma can cause total blindness.
Tsai: The eye care professional has to do a dilated eye exam and carefully look at the optic nerve for signs of glaucoma as well as asses the side vision or visual field.
Narrator: For more on glaucoma, visit www.nei.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the NIH, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
