Diet and exercise can sustain weight loss – 3

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. More than two-thirds of U.S. adults age 20 and older are overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Dr. Kevin Hall at the NIH knows this a saw contestants on the reality TV show “The Biggest Looser” loosing substantial amounts of weight.

Hall: Really surprising amounts 10, 15, 20 pounds per week, which is much greater than we typically see in weight loss programs.

Narrator: He studied contestants from the show who also volunteered for a study which shows how diet and exercise together can sustain weight loss. For more on the study, visit www.niddk.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the NIH, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
