Diet and exercise can sustain weight loss – 4

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. A team of NIH researchers, including Dr. Kevin Hall, wanted to know how contestants in the reality TV show “The Biggest Looser” could lose 10-20 pounds per week.

Hall: So I really wanted know, how many calories were they burning? How many calories were they eating? How much of the weight that is being lost is fat tissue versus lean tissues like muscle and things like that? So we got involved with the physician responsible for the care of the contestants on the show.

Narrator: He found exercise is key in reducing body fat while preserving muscle. For more on obesity research, visit www.niddk.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the NIH, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
