Prescription painkillers – 1
Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. Prescription painkillers or opioid medications have both benefits and risks.
Volkow: Many patients don’t have a good understanding about what are potential, adverse or beneficial effects of opioids.
Narrator: Dr. Nora Volkow is an institute director at the NIH
Volkow: So it’s extraordinary important for a physician to be able to educate a patient that they are thinking to give opioid medications about what the medications can do and what to expect from them and how to take them is extraordinary important.
Narrator: She adds physicians themselves need to be trained on what to tell patients about pain medications. For more about opioid medications and physician training, visit www.drugabuse.gov. Health Matters is produced by the NIH, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
