Understanding Influenza, Pandemic Flu – 2
Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. A familiar aspect of the flu is the way it can sweep through entire communities. Dr. Anthony Fauci director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases explains that one of the best weapons against the flu is a vaccine that makes neutralizing antibodies.
Fauci: And a neutralizing antibody is an antibody that can actually block the virus in question. The trouble with the induction of neutralizing antibodies with flu is that they are usually directed against a component or portion of the virus that changes readily from strain to strain.
Narrator: For details on the flu, and more about medical research, visit www.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the US Department of Health and Human Services.
