New Study Implicates Healthcare Utilization Rates in Colorectal Cancer Disparities – 3

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. Regular screenings as advised by your doctor are imperative in catching cancer early. Dr. Adeyinka Laiyemo with the National Cancer Institute says a colon cancer screening included in a recent study is called a flexible sigmoidoscopy.

Laieymo: Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a screening test for colon cancer in which a short video camera is used to look in the initial part of the colon from below. Now if any polyp was found, in this trial, the patient is referred to his or her doctor so that they can get a full colonoscopy to take a look in the entire colon.

Narrator: For more information on colon screenings, visit www.cancer.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
