Alzheimer’s Diagnostic Guidelines Updated for First Time in Decades – 1

Narrator:   This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. For the first time in 27 years, the criteria for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease have been revised, and research guidelines for earlier stages of the disease have been developed.

Phelps: We've redefined Alzheimer's disease as a disease that occurs in three phases or three stages.

Narrator: Dr. Creighton Phelps at the National Institutes of Health says people usually only think of dementia.

Phelps: However, there are stages before that, mild cognitive impairment and a pre-clinical stage that precede the development of the dementia that's associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Narrator: Experts say the new guidelines reflect a deeper understanding of the disorder. For details on the guidelines, visit www.nia.nih.gov.  Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
