Alzheimer’s Diagnostic Guidelines Updated for First Time in Decades – 2

Narrator:   This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. Experts say new guidelines for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease will benefit patients and accelerate the pace of research.   Dr. Creighton Phelps at the National Institutes of Health says the guidelines mark a major change in how researchers think about and study the disease.

Phelps: Especially the pre-clinical phase, which is a research concept, not a clinical concept yet.

Narrator: Dr. Phelps explains that now Alzheimer’s disease has been redefined as having three phases, or stages.  The first, the pre-clinical stage, is when brain changes may already be in process, but actual Alzheimer’s disease risk has not yet been determined.  For details on the guidelines, visit www.nia.nih.gov.  Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
