Complementary and Alternative Medicine Dialogue Lacking Between Patients, Providers – 1

Narrator:   This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. A recent survey has looked at the use of complementary and alternative medicine or CAM in people 50 and older.

Briggs: And the very important question of whether they talk to their health care providers.

Narrator: Dr. Josephine Briggs at the National Institutes of Health says this is the second time NIH and AARP have cosponsored a survey which now shows more than half of Americans over the age of 50 have used CAM.

Briggs: But the important take-home lesson of this study is that they're not consistently talking to healthcare providers about those alternative health practices.

Narrator: For more on this survey and CAM, visit www.nccam.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
