Dermatitis – 4

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. Atopic dermatitis is a long-term skin disease. It is most common in babies and children but can happen to anyone. The most common symptoms are dry, itchy skin, and rashes.

Katz: There are many aspects of atopic dermatitis.

Narrator: Dr. Steven Katz at the NIH adds in patients with atopic dermatitis, the immune system is thought to be altered the same way as patients with hay fever and asthma.

Katz: Also, the patients with atopic dermatitis are missing a protein in the skin that's protective against bacterial contamination.

Narrator:  Because of risk of infection with bacteria, patients with atopic dermatitis are often treated with antibiotics. For details, visit www.niams.nih.gov.  Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
