May is Healthy Vision Month – 1

Narrator:  This is NIH Health Matters.  I’m Joe Balintfy.  May is Health Vision Month.

Ammary-Risch: Healthy Vision Month primarily focuses on making sure people are seeing their best and their eyes are healthy.

Narrator:  Neyal Ammary-Risch is the Director of the National Eye Health Education Program at the National Eye Institute.

Ammary-Risch: We know right now that 14 million Americans are visually impaired; and of these, 11 million could benefit just from contact lenses or eye glasses.

Narrator:  She says it’s very important to have comprehensive dilated eye exams on a regular basis and make them part of your routine health care because many eye diseases show no symptoms in early stages.  To learn more about the importance of eye health, visit www.nei.nih.gov/healthyvisionmonth. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
