New strategic plan for NIH obesity research seeks to curb epidemic – 2

Narrator:  This is NIH Health Matters.  I’m Joe Balintfy.  Research is starting to show the specific genes that are involved with obesity.  Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health says, heredity plays a role.

Collins: But we also know that diet and exercise play an enormous role. Presumably the reason that obesity is increasing so rapidly in the U.S. is not because the gene pool has changed, it’s because there’s less exercise, in many situations, and the diet is increasingly one that predisposes, to weight gain.

Narrator: The National Institutes of Health has launched a new Strategic Plan for NIH Obesity Research. For more information on the plan, visit www.obesityresearch.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
