New strategic plan for NIH obesity research seeks to curb epidemic – 5
Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. In 2008, obesity-related medical costs were roughly $147 billion. To combat the obesity epidemic, the National Institutes of Health is encouraging more research through a new Strategic Plan for NIH Obesity Research. Dr. Francis Collins, Director of NIH, says a goal of the plan is to come up with practical solutions.
Collins: And then, once we have some ideas about interventions that do seem to work in that situation, then there will be an effort to try to generalize them.
Narrator: He adds a motivator for the plan, is to know what’s causing obesity, and what to do about it. For details, visit www.obesityresearch.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
