NHGRI Launches Improved Online Talking Glossary of Genetic Terms – 1

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. Want to understand genetics and genomics?

Witherly: What we try to do is create a single place to go where professionals can help you figure that out in a normal way.

Narrator: Jeff Witherly at the National Human Genome Research Institute explains that a new on-line glossary defines 256 genetic terms.

Witherly: A lot of the terminology in genetics is not only common in the doctor’s office, it’s common in movie plots that we see and we try to understand it and it’s become part of the American conversation. Some of these terms are double terms, genetic variation, or even mitochondria, or what is DNA? Those are all terms that are easy to find in this glossary.

Narrator: Visit the Talking Glossary of Genetic Terms at www.genome.gov/glossary. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the US Department of Health and Human Services.
