Making a plan to prevent diabetes and its complications – 4

Narrator:  This is NIH Health Matters.  I’m Joe Balintfy.  During National Diabetes Month experts share statistics on diabetes as a way to highlight this major health concern.  Dr. Griffin Rodgers, an institute director at the NIH points out that nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes, and more than one-fourth of them don’t know they have it.

Rodgers:  Approximately 79 million adults have pre-diabetes.  This is a condition that increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Narrator:  Dr. Rodgers explains that it is very important to set goals and make a plan to prevent type 2 diabetes.  For tips to prevent and manage the disease, visit www.YourDiabetesInfo.org/MakeAPlan.  Health Matters is produced by the NIH, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
