Inefficient stoves contribute to 2 million deaths a year – 4
Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. Inefficient stoves used in developing countries cause 2 million deaths a year. And the stove is only part of the problem.
Martin: You could give the most advanced stove to a family and if they use as their fuel leaves or twigs that have been picked up along the side of the road you will still get a smoke bomb.
Narrator: Dr. William Martin at the NIH explains, solving the problem of indoor or household air pollution – something that affects 3 billion people worldwide – takes cooperation.
Martin: To reach the hundreds of millions of homes necessary, it really takes a village.
Narrator: The Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is coordinating the effort. For details, visit the website cleancookstoves.org. Health Matters is produced by the NIH, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
