Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. Having a drink now and then as you get older is not known to be harmful.

Willenbring: I think the point is not that drinking alcohol is a good or bad thing per say.

Narrator: Dr. Mark Willenbring with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse, and Alcoholism says, its important to weigh the risks and benefits associated with drinking.

Willenbring: The question is for a given individual is drinking better for you or worse for you.

Narrator: Alcohol can be a problem for older adults, especially if they take certain medications, have health problems or don’t control their drinking. Alcohol Use and Older Adults is the newest topic on website www.NIHSeniorHealth.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
