Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. A global health initiative is aiming to improve mental health worldwide.
Collins: The initiative is called Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health.
Narrator: Dr. Pamela Collins is with the NIH.
Collins: And this is an initiative that was meant to catalyze investment and research needed to reduce the burden of mental, neurological and substance use disorders.
Narrator: Experts add these disorders – for example, schizophrenia, depression, epilepsy, dementia, and alcohol dependence – account for years of life lost to poor health and disability, and have few effective treatments or preventive methods. The initiative has identified the top 40 barriers to better mental health around the world. For more information, visit www.nimh.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
