Thinking globally to improve mental health – 3

Narrator:  This is NIH Health Matters.  I’m Joe Balintfy.  Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are the target of a global health initiative.  NIH’s Dr. Pamela Collins says the initiative is meant to catalyze the investment and research needed to reduce the burden of disorders like depression, schizophrenia, and alcohol dependence.

Collins: They really highlight the need for a range of science, from discovery science to services research, to policy research, and intervention studies. And this whole range is needed to address the needs for management of disease for disease burden reduction of these kinds of illnesses.

Narrator:  For details on the initiative, called the Grand Challenge in Global Mental Health, visit www.nimh.nih.gov.  Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
