Malaria awareness – 4
Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. An NIH-funded researcher at Colorado State University has looked at village-wide treatments in Southeastern Senegal with a drug typically used to treat infection with various worms. Dr. Brian Foy says the same medication may control malaria by killing mosquitoes.
Foy: We were collecting mosquitoes before and after treatments and determining their survival rates; and when we did that, we saw a significant drop in the mosquito survival.
Narrator: While this study shows promise, NIH’s Dr. Adriana Costero reminds that this research is at an early stage.
Costero: But he has found evidence of something very interesting so he’s going to pursue that.
Narrator: For details on this research, visit www.niaid.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
