Thornton: As part of its Women's Health Seminar Series, the Office of Research on Women's Health and the Office of the Director recently presented "Caregiving," a seminar on the behavioral and social implications of care-giving throughout the life span. The seminar discussed care-giving for disabled children, the unique gender and cultural differences associated with care-giving and the necessity for care givers to take care of themselves. Suzanne Mintz President and Co-founder of the National Family Caregivers Association defines the role of care givers.
Mintz: Family care givers are people who have an emotional bond with another person who is chronically ill or disabled. So it is a relationship that is built on caring and emotion and there are more than 50 million people in the country today who are providing some level of care-giving services.
