Transcript:

Schmalfeldt: The National Institutes of Health played host recently to a seminar on the unique problems faced by women suffering from diabetes. The conference — called "Stopping the Clock on Diabetes in Women: Strategies for Prevention and Treatment Across the Lifespan" featured speakers on a variety of topics, including preventing cardiovascular complications of diabetes, information about gestational diabetes, and diabetes self-management in the real world. The gathering was sponsored by the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health, and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Acting NIDDK Director, Dr. Griffin Rodgers, was the keynote speaker. He talked about how this disease touches many of the institutes and centers at the NIH.

Rodgers: The NIH supports, really, a broad spectrum of research in diabetes. And this effort is really highly collaborative. The NIDDK, as our name indicates, takes the lead in diabetes research and coordination. But because the disease affects so many organ systems and has so many different types of etiologies, including autoimmune diseases for example, diabetes sort of goes throughout the spectrum of life, from the child health institute (NICHD) and the aging institute (NIA). And, of course, it has many complications including the eye, the cardiovascular system, and the nervous system. There are a number of institutes intimately involved in research in the area of diabetes. And we certainly appreciate all the work that the Office of Research on Women's Health is doing in really coordinating many of the efforts in diabetes research to really support and enhance studies in diabetes in women.

Schmalfeldt: A videocast of the seminar is available online at videocast.nih.gov. From the National Institutes of Health, I'm Bill Schmalfeldt in Bethesda, Maryland.
