2005 NIH "Pioneer Awards" Presented Right Click to Download MP3 File Brief Description: Transcript: Zerhouni: One of the challenges that anyone has leading a scientific organization like the NIH, is to always ask yourself the question — have you been at the frontier, have you really touched the edge of knowledge, have you done what you need to make sure that great ideas are not smothered. This is a question the entire scientific community always faced. I think to identify the most creative innovative scientist and give them a chance to run without impediments is truly our duty. Akinso: The awardees were selected from 840 scientists who underwent a streamlined but rigorous self-nomination and evaluation process that began in March. The recipients each will receive $500,000 geared to help their research efforts. The winners of the 2005 NIH Director's Pioneer Award are identified on the website — www.nihroadmap.nih.gov/pioneer. This is Wally Akinso at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. |
