Enabling the Warrior Within for Host Defense
Roadmap supported research established proof that the HIV protein known as Vif can be drugged in living cells and that the consequence of Vif antagonists is suppression of an HIV infection. Screening methods supported by the roadmap were transferred to a national center where compounds were discovered that are broadly neutralizing of all strains of HIV; a critical achievement in the cure initiative. The technology established a foundation for research that led to the discovery of additional compounds that enable cells to destroy Vif and thereby enable our natural cell defense to protect us from HIV/AIDS.
