Planning Efforts

Early in 2015, NIH created a working group to develop a plan to address research at the intersection of pediatric and environmental health. This working group, which is composed of representatives from 16 Institutes, Centers, and Offices within the NIH Office of the Director, is led by Lawrence A. Tabak, D.D.S., Ph.D., NIH Principal Deputy Director, and Janine A. Clayton, M.D., Associate Director for Research on Women’s Health. To gather feedback from the community on the direction of the plan, the working group coordinated numerous outreach activities:

  • Stakeholder Roundtables were held in mid-July with more than 20 pediatric, environmental health, epidemiology, and advocacy organizations.
  • Three webinars were held in late July 2015 and drew over 400 participants.
  • A Request for Information (RFI) on the ECHO Program solicited nearly 200 responses. NIH conducted an analysis of the input on the RFI and published a report.
  • NIH also solicited feedback on specific issues being considered for the plan in late August 2015.
  • NIH announced its plans for the ECHO program through a Guide Notice in mid-October.
