Statement on the Launch of the Bio Genesis Mission, NIH’s component of the national Genesis Mission

Earlier today, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced additional partnerships in the Genesis Mission, a national effort to harness artificial intelligence and advanced computing to accelerate American science and secure U.S. leadership in the technologies that will define the coming decade. I am proud to announce the NIH-led contribution to that effort, the Bio Genesis Mission. This major initiative will build a future-ready, intelligent biomedical research ecosystem through technology, policy, and partnership innovation and acceleration. Our goal is to cut in half the time it takes for a scientific discovery to reach the people who need it within the next ten years.

Patients living with cancer, chronic disease, or a rare condition don't experience research timelines as an abstraction, they experience them as years spent waiting for answers. The Bio Genesis Mission is our answer to that wait. By pairing artificial intelligence and advanced computing with new approaches to policy, governance, and partnership, we intend to reimagine how researchers, institutions, data, and infrastructure work together, so that promising science moves at the speed patients deserve.

This work spans some of the most consequential challenges in biomedicine: predicting the behavior of living systems; scaling American biomanufacturing; detecting biological threats earlier; using AI to unlock new treatments for pediatric cancer; accelerating the translation and repurposing of drug discoveries into clinical care; and understanding the root causes of chronic disease.

NIH has been actively investing in these priority areas, with more than $1.2 billion in obligated FY26 and planned FY27 funding aligned to these challenge areas, alongside new Bio Genesis Mission funding opportunities to be announced soon, to move these priorities forward. This work builds directly on the foundation the White House OSTP has established through the Genesis Mission, including partnership on the American Science and Security Platform that the Department of Energy (DOE) has developed to bring advanced computing, scientific facilities, and data resources to bear on our shared goals.

I recognize that promises of faster discovery through AI are not new, and that skepticism is warranted whenever a powerful new tool meets the complexity of human biology and the sensitivity of patient data. That skepticism is healthy, and it is why this initiative is built around responsible governance and data security from the outset, not as an afterthought. AI will not replace the scientific judgment, rigor, and peer review that have always driven medical progress, rather it will extend their reach.

The Bio Genesis Mission reflects a simple conviction: American science remains capable of extraordinary things when we build the infrastructure and partnerships to enable our ambitions. NIH is proud to stand with the White House OSTP, DOE, and partners across the Genesis Mission on behalf of the patients and families counting on us to move faster.
