The goal of the NIH-led Bio Genesis Mission is to double the pace of biomedical innovation, from discovery to health impact, within the next five to 10 years.

In July 2026, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, announced new efforts in support of Executive Order 14363, Launching the Genesis Mission. Genesis Mission is a national effort to harness artificial intelligence and advanced computing to accelerate American science and secure U.S. leadership in the technologies that will define the coming decade.

The Bio Genesis Mission, NIH's contribution to that national effort, represents a major initiative to accelerate biomedical discovery and improve health outcomes by leveraging artificial intelligence, advanced computing, innovative approaches to policy and governance, and public-private partnerships.

This is more than applying AI to existing research workflows. It is about reimagining how researchers, institutions, data resources, and scientific infrastructure work together to solve the biomedical challenges that matter most to American patients and families, while safeguarding the sensitive data that makes this research possible.

The Bio Genesis Mission is advancing science focused on six new National Science and Technology Challenges:

  • Predicting living systems: Using AI to model and forecast the behavior of complex biological systems
  • Scaling biology for American industrial leadership: Accelerating the path from biological discovery to domestic biomanufacturing
  • Early detection and attribution of biological threats: Strengthening national biosecurity and biosurveillance capabilities
  • Unlocking cures for pediatric cancer through artificial intelligence: Applying AI to accelerate research on childhood cancers
  • Accelerating drug discovery and clinical translation: Shortening the timeline from discovery to treatment
  • Understanding the root causes of chronic disease: Using AI and advanced data resources to investigate the drivers of chronic illness

National Effort

NIH is working in close partnership with the White House OSTP and other Genesis Mission agencies to advance the American Science and Security Platform, which integrates advanced computing, scientific facilities, data resources, and AI capabilities to accelerate discovery across the federal research enterprise.

Within that national framework, the Bio Genesis Mission is specifically focused on National Science and Technology Challenges in the biomedical research enterprise, including how researchers, institutions, and private partners can leverage the American Science and Security Platform, clinical infrastructure, and data resources to drive discovery and translation in service of human health.

NIH is building the infrastructure, partnerships, and governance needed to enable AI-powered biomedical discovery at scale, ensuring that the benefits of the broader Genesis Mission reach patients as quickly and safely as possible.
