Statement on the Death of Former Senator Ted Stevens
I am deeply saddened about the tragic death of former Senator Ted Stevens. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Catherine, his extended family, and all those who share in our grief. Ted was one of the country's most dedicated public servants. Beyond his legendary role as champion for his home state of Alaska, Senator Stevens was a staunch supporter for biomedical research. As Appropriations Committee Chairman, he oversaw critical increases in funding for NIH. I had the pleasure of many vigorous discussions with him about science and health. Over the years, millions of Americans have benefited from his wise stewardship and public advocacy.
Senator Stevens was a friend to me and my colleagues. We will honor his legacy through our continued dedication to the research that he helped make possible.
