Statement of Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. on Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors Appointments

“I look forward to serving on the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors, which is the new, nonprofit corporation established by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.

Today, Gene L. Dodaro, Acting Comptroller General of the United States, appointed 19 members to the Board, including scientists, health care professionals, insurers, representatives from the biomedical industry, and health care consumers.

In addition to the members appointed today, the Act specifies that the Board include the Director of NIH and the Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). I look forward to continuing to work closely with Dr. Carolyn Clancy, AHRQ Director.

PCORI faces many exciting opportunities to contribute to a robust portfolio of scientific inquiry that builds upon NIH’s investment in comparative effectiveness research. Thanks to today’s impressive appointments, PCORI is poised to start taking advantage of those opportunities in a swift and efficient manner.

Working together, I’m confident that we will enable PCORI to achieve its goal of encouraging the generation of rigorous evidence that will improve patient outcomes.”
